  • Critical Update: New DEA Protocols for Controlled Substance Prescriptions

Essential Information for All Pet Owners

As of April 2025, Town and Country Animal Clinic has implemented updated protocols regarding controlled substance prescriptions in accordance with DEA regulations. This affects how we manage certain medications for your pets.

What Defines a Controlled Substance?

Controlled substances are chemicals and pharmaceutical agents identified by the United States Department of Justice/Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as having potential for abuse. These medications require stricter management protocols.

Controlled Substances at Our Clinic

Medications classified as controlled substances at Town and Country Animal Clinic include:

  • Alprazolam
  • Tramadol
  • Tussigon (Hydrocodone)
  • Phenobarbital
  • Buprenorphine oral solution
  • Gabapentin*

*While not currently regulated as a controlled substance by the DEA, Gabapentin will be handled with identical refill requirements at our clinic for patient safety.

Updated Examination Requirements

To comply with DEA regulations, pets requiring controlled substance prescriptions must now:

  1. Have an examination with a veterinarian every 6 months
  2. Complete laboratory work every 3-6 months (depending on medication type and patient history).

Refill Protocol Changes

Our updated refill protocols mandate that:

  • Controlled medications can only be dispensed in 30-60 day quantities
  • Refills cannot be processed earlier than 5 days before current supply depletion
  • All refill requests require a minimum 72-hour processing window
  • If your pet’s medication supply is depleted and an examination is due, we can provide sufficient medication to reach the appointment date (not exceeding 5 days’ worth)

Our Commitment

Town and Country Animal Clinic remains dedicated to providing exceptional veterinary care while adhering to regulatory requirements established by the Drug Enforcement Administration. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with these necessary protocols.
